About the Event
Program 1:
Our first night of exploring Dimitri Shostakovich's quartets starts with number 1 in C major. When spaeking of his first quartet Shostakovich said: "Don't expect to find special depth in this, my first quartet opus. In mood it is joyful, merry, lyrical. I would call it 'spring-like'."Our second night will take us to his last quartet, #15 in E flat minor. With a key signature of 6 flats, the 15th quartet has the the greatest tonal distance possible from C major. One can sense Shostakovich's concern with death and view this as a requiem of sorts. The journey from #1 to #15 lasted 36 years! Don't miss this emotionally mesmerizing journey.
