About the Event

Langston Hughes and Margaret Bonds

Musikiwest invites you to immerse yourself in the generous spirit of the holidays. A Christmas Cantata - The Ballad of The Brown King by Margaret Bonds and Langston Hughes. This gem was dedicated to Martin Luther King and Margaret openly said she considered it as propaganda for Black people. It was met with great success but then got buried similar to so many works by other black female composers.  This is the second offering of this holiday program that we hope to make an annual tradtition.

The version you will hear was arranged by Malcom Merriweather for chamber choir and chamber orchestra which is how it allows us to present it in SandBox. Our incredibly talented and diverse community including Tammy Hall as organist and pianist, Leberta Loral our solo soprano, Jeannine Anderson - alto solo, Reg Huston - solo bass Jody Lee - conductor and soprano choir member, Michelle Djoki…
